Naturalness vs. Predictability: A Key Debate in Controlled Languages
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we describe two quite different philosophies used in developing controlled languages (CLs): A "naturalist" approach, in which CL interpretation is treated as a simpler form of full natural language processing, including ambiguity resolution; and a "formalist" approach, in which the CL interpretation is “deterministic” (context insensitive) and the CL is viewed more as an English-like formal specification language. Despite the philosophical and practical differences, we suggest that a synthesis can be made in which a deterministic core is embedded in a naturalist CL, and illustrate this with our own controlled language CPL. In the second part of this paper we present a fictitious debate between an ardent “naturalist” and an ardent “formalist”, each arguing their respective positions, to illustrate the benefits and tradeoffs of these different philosophies in an accessible way. Communication Skills of Agricultural Sciences University Teachers in Iran
This study concerns determining the factors that may influence the communication skill of those university teachers involved in the field of agricultural sciences in Iran. Accordingly, based on a cross-sectional survey method, a conceptual model of communication skill has been devised through reviewing the related literature. Next, the model was revised by the expert panel of the study into a s...
متن کاملGeneration of fundamental frequency contours for Thai speech synthesis using tone nucleus model
As classic and intrinsic requirements, synthetic speech need to convey correct information with good quality of naturalness to listeners. Fundamental frequency (F0) contours need to be controlled to meet these requirements. Additional challenges have been introduced to tonal languages because the F0 contour reflects both intelligibility and naturalness of the speech. According to the fact that ...
متن کاملVisual Language Modeling on CNN Image Representations
Measuring the naturalness of images is important to generate realistic images or to detect unnatural regions in images. Additionally, a method to measure naturalness can be complementary to Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based features, which are known to be insensitive to the naturalness of images. However, most probabilistic image models have insufficient capability of modeling the comple...

This study explored the nature of transfer among bilingual vs. trilinguals with varying levels of competence in English and their previous languages. The hypotheses were tested in writing tasks designed for 75 high (N= 35) vs. intermediate (N=40) proficient EFL learners with Turkish, Persian, English and Persian, English linguistic backgrounds. Qualitative data were also collected through some ...

Employing the appraisal framework in discovering the way ideology is crystalized through discourse, the present study attempts to investigate how journalistic ideologies and political positions are manifested through attitudinal terms. Referring to White’s (2012) distinction of attitude types, inscribed vs. invoked, based on Martin and White’s (2005) appraisal theory, journalistic ideology toge...
